Since its launch, 61850 University’s Mobile Digital Substation (MDS) has stood as the world’s first and most comprehensive hands-on mobile IEC 61850 training lab.
The MDS is undergoing a complete overhaul, upgraded with the latest models from the major vendors and redesigned to reflect how the protection and control industry is evolving today.
The updated MDS will feature the newest IED models from the major industry partners, ensuring participants are training on the latest and greatest equipment they’ll encounter in real-world deployments.
The new MDS will include the latest IEC 61869 Sampled Value profiles. Participants will gain hands-on experience with process bus configurations that reflect where the industry is headed.
For the first time, the updated MDS will support distributed, centralized, and virtualized protection in a single environment. This will give participants a rare side-by-side comparison and demonstration of where the industry has been, where it is now, and where it’s going — and make it the most complete training environment available anywhere in the world.
The updated MDS will make its debut at our Fall 2026 Tier I & II training co-hosted by Southern California Edison in Pomona, California!

This intensive 5-day course will cover IEC 61850 Fundamentals & Principles alongside Advanced training and hands-on digital substation workshops. Each day, classroom sessions are followed by hands-on workshop time where participants configure real IEDs, including process bus, across all major vendor platforms using the newly overhauled MDS.
Participants will have the opportunity to tour SCE’s Grid Monitoring Lab for a rare, firsthand look at utility-scale IEC 61850 infrastructure in action.
